Starlink is SpaceX’s satellite internet service, built on a constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites orbiting at approximately 550 km above Earth, around 65 times closer than traditional geostationary satellites like Sky Muster. That proximity is what gives Starlink its lower latency and higher speeds compared to older GEO satellite internet.
The service covers all of Australia, including remote outback locations, as long as you have a clear view of the sky. No technician is required. Starlink ships a self-install kit to your address and you set it up yourself. Plan types cover residential home use, business, and mobile or roaming use for caravans and RVs.

Starlink offers three residential speed tiers in Australia, all month-to-month with no lock-in contract. Prices below are sourced from third-party comparisons and cross-referenced as of April 22, 2026. Starlink Roam (caravans and RVs)

Starlink Roam lets you use the service while travelling around Australia, making it a practical option for grey nomads and caravan travellers. Plans start at around $80/month for 100 GB of priority data, with an unlimited Roam option available at a higher price point. Verify current Roam pricing at starlink.com/au. For business use, see Skymesh’s Starlink Business page.

Starlink is a “best-efforts” service with no guaranteed speeds. What you experience will vary based on your location, local network demand, weather, and your plan tier. Independent ACCC data provides the most reliable real-world picture available.

ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia, Report 31 (December 2025)

      • Average download speed: 228.8 Mbps peak / 197.2 Mbps during busy hours (7-11pm weeknights)
      • Average latency: 26.7 ms all hours / 28 ms during busy hours
      • Upload speeds: Steady throughout the day

Source: ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia Report 31, December 2025. accc.gov.au

At 26-28 ms, latency is low enough for video calls, remote work, online gaming, and streaming. Sky Muster measured over 660 ms in the same report. For most Australian users, Starlink delivers well above 100 Mbps, which is faster than most nbn 100 plans.

      Weather and signal quality

Starlink uses Ku-band radio frequencies, which rain and heavy cloud cover affect. Research published in the 2025 IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland / University of Oulu) found that heavy rain reduced median download throughput by around 38% and upload by around 52%. A connection running at 150-200 Mbps in clear conditions might drop to 75-90 Mbps during a heavy downpour. Complete outages during rain are uncommon but possible in extreme storms.

      Satellite handoffs

Starlink’s satellites move across the sky continuously, and the dish switches between them as they pass overhead. ACCC Report 31 recorded an average of 0.35 brief outages per day from these handoffs. Most last 1-2 seconds and pass unnoticed during browsing or streaming, though they may briefly interrupt an active video call or online game.

As of January 2026, Starlink uses a rental model. Hardware is included with your plan at no upfront cost. If you cancel, the equipment must be returned within 30 days or a $549 charge applies. Outright purchase is available from retailers including JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, and Officeworks for around $549.

      The standard residential kit contains:

      • Self-aligning dish: Automatically orients itself toward the satellites. No manual aiming required.
      • Base/stand: For ground-level installation. Roof mounts are sold separately.
      • WiFi router: For your home network.
      • Cables: A connection cable between dish and router, approximately 15 metres.

Verify current kit contents at starlink.com/au, as hardware specs are updated periodically.

      Self-install

Setup involves unboxing, connecting the components, and following the steps in the Starlink app. The app includes an obstruction checker that shows whether your chosen install spot has a clear enough sky view. Trees, buildings, or terrain can affect signal quality even in areas with full coverage.

How this differs from Sky Muster

With Sky Muster NBN through Skymesh, nbn Co installs and maintains the satellite equipment at your premises at no cost. Damage from extreme weather is repaired or replaced by nbn Co for free. With Starlink, the equipment is your responsibility during your service period and must be returned in working order when you cancel.

Starlink covers all of Australia, including the most remote outback locations. The network is supported by 20 ground stations across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia.

To confirm availability and pricing at a specific address, enter it at starlink.com/au. A clear sky view is still a requirement regardless of coverage. Trees, buildings, ridgelines, and other obstructions can block the signal. The Starlink app’s obstruction checker helps identify the best spot on your property.

Check what nbn technology is available at your address

Starlink is one of several options available to Australians in regional and remote areas. Brief overviews below. Deeper comparisons are in the dedicated guides linked under each section.

      Sky Muster NBN

Sky Muster is nbn Co’s satellite internet service and the most direct alternative for remote areas outside the fixed-line and fixed wireless NBN footprint. Sky Muster Plus Premium through Skymesh offers unlimited data and speeds of up to 100 Mbps, with free standard installation and nbn Co-managed equipment. Monthly costs are lower than Starlink, with no demand surcharges and no shipping fees. The trade-off is latency. Sky Muster satellites sit around 36,000 km above Earth, producing average latency of over 660 ms against Starlink’s 26-28 ms. For browsing, streaming, and email, Sky Muster handles these comfortably. For online gaming, the difference is noticeable.

Full Starlink vs Sky Muster comparison

      • Best for: households in remote Australia where fixed-line and fixed wireless nbn don’t reach, and where keeping monthly costs low matters more than low latency

      Fixed wireless NBN

Where a fixed wireless NBN tower is within range of your property, it’s worth checking before committing to a Starlink satellite service. A radio signal from an nbn tower connects to an antenna on your premises. Where available, fixed wireless performance can offer more consistency than satellite and at a lower cost.

      • Best for: semi-rural and regional properties within range of an nbn tower. Recent network upgrades have pushed fixed wireless speeds up to 400 Mbps in eligible areas, with low latency and consistent performance mostly unaffected by weather, all at a lower monthly cost than satellite.

Fixed-line NBN (FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTN)

Fixed-line NBN uses physical cable connections unaffected by weather, with lower latency and more consistent performance than satellite. If fixed-line NBN is available at your address, it is almost always a better choice than Starlink. Many Australian households previously unable to access FTTP are now eligible for a free or subsidised upgrade.

      • Best for: anyone with fixed-line nbn available at their address — it will almost always outperform Starlink on speed, consistency, and price

      5G home internet

5G home internet suits metro and urban areas with strong 5G coverage. It’s not a realistic substitute for Starlink users in rural or remote locations. Plans are capped at 50 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or uncapped. If you’re in a major city or regional centre with solid 5G coverage, it’s worth comparing.

Best for: metro and major regional centre residents with strong 5G coverage who want a flexible, no-infrastructure alternative to fixed-line nbn

Starlink is likely a good fit if…Starlink may not be the best option if…
You’re in a rural, regional, or remote area with no fixed-line or fixed wireless NBN accessFixed-line NBN (FTTP, HFC, FTTC) is available at your address
You’re on Sky Muster and want a significant latency upgradeYou’re in a metro area where fixed-line NBN will outperform Starlink at lower cost
You need internet quickly without waiting for NBN infrastructure workBudget is the primary concern and Sky Muster Plus Premium meets your speed needs
You work from home in a regional area and need reliable speeds for video callsYou’d prefer fully managed equipment with no return obligation on cancellation
You travel in a caravan or RV and need mobile internet coverage across AustraliaYou’re willing to wait for Amazon Leo, nbn’s upcoming LEO satellite service trialling in late 2026

Skymesh’s address checker will show you what’s available at your property.

Orders go through starlink.com/au directly, or through retailers including JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, and Harvey Norman. Hardware costs are the same whether you buy direct or from a retailer, though promotions vary. Delivery takes a few days to a week depending on location.

Starlink offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. Return the kit within 30 days of shipment for a full hardware refund. Plan fees are not refunded.

      Telstra and Optus

Telstra offers a Starlink-based Satellite Home Internet plan at $125/month with download speeds capped at 50 Mbps. Optus is working toward a direct-to-mobile satellite service that extends coverage into areas beyond its terrestrial network. Verify current availability and terms directly with each carrier.

        Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Starlink cost per month in Australia?

Residential plans are priced at $69/month (100 Mbps), $99/month (200 Mbps), and $139/month (Residential Max, uncapped). All are month-to-month. Equipment is included as a free rental. A one-time demand surcharge ranging from $0 to $1,295 or more may apply at some addresses and only appears when you enter your address at starlink.com/au.

What equipment do I need for Starlink and how does it install?

Starlink sends a self-install kit containing a self-aligning satellite dish, a base, a WiFi router, and cables. No technician is required. Setup is guided by the Starlink app, which includes an obstruction checker to help locate a spot with a clear sky view. Most ground-level installs take under an hour.

What speeds will I get with Starlink in regional Australia?

ACCC Report 31 (December 2025) recorded average download speeds of 228.8 Mbps at peak and 197.2 Mbps during busy hours across Australian users, with average latency of 26.7 ms. Individual speeds vary by location, plan tier, local congestion, and weather. Heavy rain can reduce throughput by around 38%.

Is Starlink available at my address?

Starlink covers all of Australia, but not every plan tier is available at every address, and a demand surcharge may apply in some locations. Enter your address at starlink.com/au for an accurate answer. A clear sky view is also required regardless of coverage.

What happens if I want to cancel Starlink?

There’s no lock-in contract on standard residential plans. Cancelling within the 30-day trial period gets you a full equipment refund (plan fees excluded). After 30 days, billing stops on cancellation but there are no hardware refunds. On the rental model, equipment not returned within 30 days of cancellation attracts a $549 charge.
