    Key takeaways

    • Starlink is faster with lower latency. Average download speeds around 192 Mbps and latency of 26.7 ms make it the better choice for video calls, online gaming, and large file uploads (ACCC Report 31, December 2025).
    • Sky Muster is generally cheaper with no surprise costs. No equipment fees, no installation costs, no demand surcharges, and no exit fees. Some Starlink locations face a one-off surcharge of up to $1,295
    • Sky Muster includes free professional installation and lifetime equipment maintenance. Starlink uses self-install with rented equipment that must be returned within 30 days of cancellation, or you pay $549.
    • Skymesh offers phone support 7-days per week. Starlink provides online-only support, with customer reports of waits ranging from hours to several days.
    • Choose Starlink if you work from home, rely on real-time apps, or need maximum speed regardless of cost.
    • Choose Sky Muster if your household mostly streams, browses, and video-calls, and you want predictable pricing with hands-on phone support.

Starlink is faster than Sky Muster, and its latency is much lower. We’re not going to pretend otherwise.

The ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Australia program (Report 31, December 2025) measured Starlink’s average latency at 26.7 ms across all hours, rising to 28 ms during busy hours. Sky Muster latency was previously measured at 664.9 ms in earlier reports, an order of magnitude higher. Starlink’s average download speeds sit around 192 Mbps across all hours, dropping to about 165.5 Mbps during the 7pm to 11pm busy window. Sky Muster Plus Premium delivers up to 100 Mbps on the highest tier.

      So who notices the difference?

If you work from home and live on Zoom calls, push large files, take client video meetings, or play fast online games, Starlink’s lower latency will feel different the moment you switch on. Real-time apps depend on the round trip back to the server, and Starlink’s low-earth-orbit constellation cuts that round trip dramatically.

For households that mostly browse, stream, send email, video-call family on the weekend, and watch the occasional 4K movie, Sky Muster Plus Premium handles it. The 100 Mbps tier is enough for HD and 4K streaming on multiple devices. Latency higher up the geostationary orbit shows up in real-time tools, less so when Netflix is buffering ahead of you.

The ACCC also tracks outages. Starlink averages 0.35 brief outages per day, mostly satellite-handoff micro-drops of one to two seconds. Sky Muster averages 0.21 outages per day, with longer durations when they happen. Different shapes of reliability, neither service is perfect.

      Cost Comparison (Annual Breakdown)

Hardware, monthly fees, and the demand surcharge all factor into the annual total.

Starlink’s Residential 100 Mbps plan is $69/month (with a current four-month $49 promo for new customers). The 200 Mbps plan is $99/month and the uncapped Residential Max plan is $139/month. The dish is now $0 on the rental model, but you owe $549 if you cancel without returning it. Some addresses also see a one-off demand surcharge of up to $1,295 on top.

Skymesh’s current Sky Muster Plus Ultra plans run $59.95/month for up to 25 Mbps, $74.95/month for up to 50 Mbps, and $99.95/month for up to 100 Mbps for the first six months of service, with standard pricing applying after that. There’s no setup fee, no install fee, no shipping cost, no surcharge, and no exit fee. The dish stays installed and maintained at no charge for the life of the service.

For a household that doesn’t need the highest speeds, Sky Muster Plus Premium will work out cheaper across the year, sometimes by hundreds of dollars once a potential surcharge is factored in, depending on your location.

We’re biased here. We sell Sky Muster. That also means we know it inside out, and we’ll tell you straight when it’s not the right fit.

Pick Starlink if speed and low latency are your priority, especially if you work from home and depend on video calls, fast uploads, or online gaming. The performance gap is genuine and the data backs it up.

Pick Skymesh Sky Muster if cost is a real factor and Sky Muster Plus Premium speeds cover what your household does online. The dish stays installed at no charge for the life of the service, there’s no demand surcharge anywhere on the network, and when something goes sideways, we answer the phone.

        Frequently Asked Questions

Is Starlink faster than Sky Muster?

Yes. Starlink’s average download speeds (around 192 Mbps) and latency (26.7 ms per ACCC Report 31) are both significantly better than Sky Muster Plus Premium’s up-to-100 Mbps plans and higher latency. The performance gap shows up most clearly during video calls, gaming, and other real-time applications.

Is Sky Muster cheaper than Starlink?

For some households, yes. Sky Muster Plus Ultra plans through Skymesh start at $69.95/month ongoing for the entry tier, with free installation, no setup fees, no shipping costs, and no demand surcharge. Starlink Residential plans start at $69/month, and some addresses also pay a one-off demand surcharge of up to $1,295 at checkout depending on your location. The total cost difference often comes down to whether your address attracts a Starlink surcharge and whether you’d otherwise pay for installation or equipment.

Can I switch from Sky Muster to Starlink?

Yes. Skymesh Sky Muster plans run on a rolling 30-day contract with 30 days’ notice to cancel, and there’s no exit fee, so you can switch whenever you want. Worth checking whether your address has a Starlink demand surcharge before placing the order.

Does Sky Muster have unlimited data?

Sky Muster Plus Ultra plans through Skymesh include unlimited data, subject to nbn Co’s fair use policy.

What happens to Sky Muster when Amazon Leo launches?

nbn Co plans to transition Sky Muster customers to Amazon’s low-earth-orbit satellite service, branded Amazon Leo (formerly Project Kuiper). Skymesh expects the service to start trials in Australia from late-2026 and will offer Kuiper plans to eligible customers within the nbn satellite footprint. Existing Sky Muster customers will get upgrade options as they become available. Register your interest in Amazon Leo to be the first to hear when plans, pricing, and availability are confirmed.
