      FTTP speeds explained

FTTP runs fibre directly to the premises, but speed still depends on the plan and network conditions. Speed depends on the plan you choose and on network conditions. See our nbn® Fibre plans page for current speed information for Skymesh nbn® 25, nbn® 50 and nbn® 100 plans.

nbn® determines the technology type at each premises. Check your address before choosing a speed so you only compare plans available at your property.

For how the technology works, see our FTTP guide. When choosing a plan, consider the way your household uses the internet.

Is FTTP the fastest nbn® technology type?

With FTTP, fibre runs directly to your premises rather than stopping at a node, a building or a kerbside pit.

FTTP can offer the fastest nbn® plan in terms of nbn® setup and connection approach when compared to other connection types like Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Building (FTTB), and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC). This is because these technologies use existing copper lines as the last part of the connection.

The same goes for Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), as the existing cable network is utilised as the final part of the connection.

Still, the specific FTTP speeds can vary due to different factors, one of which is the plan you choose.

Speeds vary by plan and by nbn® technology type. See our nbn® Fibre plans page for current typical evening speed figures and the disclaimer that applies to each plan. Skymesh also offers Fibre Fast+, with Maximum Theoretical Attainable Speeds of 500Mbps download and 50Mbps upload. For customers on FTTP and HFC connections, nbn® 100 is automatically boosted to nbn® 500. See our nbn® Fibre plans page for more information.

Other factors that may affect the speed of your FTTP internet plans include:

      • Hardware. How your computer and other network equipment, such as your modem, router, or access point, perform will affect your internet speed. The length and quality of fibre optic cable used to connect your household to the node and POI can contribute to how fast the connection will be.
      • Software. The configuration of your operating system, network stack, online application, and network equipment may affect the speed of your FTTP plan.
      • Radio-frequency interference. Your Wi-Fi network may be slowed down by interference from nearby networks, microwave ovens, faulty power supplies, or other equipment.

Contact Skymesh if you want to talk speeds through. If nbn® has allocated FTTP to your address, our team can walk you through the Skymesh fibre plans available at your place and what each one suits.ork best for you.

Which FTTP speed suits your household?

Count the people and devices likely to be online at the same time, then consider higher-bandwidth activities such as video calls, 4K streaming, gaming and large downloads. Compare those needs with the typical evening speeds and plan details available.

The fastest plan is not automatically the right fit. A household with lighter simultaneous use may prioritise a lower monthly cost, while a busier household may want more headroom. See our FTTP plans for current plan details and pricing, or explore our fast nbn® guide for more information.

What does typical evening speed mean?

Typical evening speed gives you an indication of plan performance during the busy evening period, from 7pm to 11pm. Actual speeds can vary depending on factors such as network conditions, your Wi-Fi setup and how many people are using the connection at the same time.

      Does Wi-Fi affect FTTP speeds?

Yes. FTTP brings fibre to the premises, but the connection between your router and devices may still use Wi-Fi. Your router, device capability, Wi-Fi interference and where you use your device in the home can affect the speeds you experience.

How do I know if FTTP is available in my location?
