³ Latency
Skymesh nbn® Fibre: nbn® fixed-line connections typically deliver latency of approximately 5–15 ms. The ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia program consistently reports NBN fixed-line latency in this range.
Source: accc.gov.au/consumers/telecommunications-and-internet/broadband-performance-data
Starlink: The ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia program (Report 31, December 2025) measured Starlink’s average latency at 26.7 ms across all hours, increasing slightly to 28 ms during busy hours. Starlink advertises latency of 25–60 ms.
Sources: accc.gov.au/consumers/telecommunications-and-internet/broadband-performance-data | starlink.com/au
Note: Lower latency is better. Latency affects video calls, online gaming, and real-time applications. A difference of 10–15 ms is generally noticeable in gaming and video conferencing.
⁴ Weather Reliability
Skymesh nbn® Fibre: nbn® fixed-line connections (FTTP, HFC, FTTC, FTTB, FTTN) are physically wired connections that are not affected by weather conditions including rain, storms, cloud cover, or heat.
Source: nbnco.com.au
Starlink: As a satellite-based service, Starlink performance is affected by weather conditions. Research from the University of Oulu found heavy rain reduces Starlink download speeds by approximately 38% and upload speeds by approximately 52%. Australian users have reported speeds dropping from 150+ Mbps to 75–90 Mbps during heavy rain, with brief disconnections possible during intense storms. Light rain and normal cloud cover have negligible impact.

⁵ Service Reliability
Skymesh nbn® Fibre: nbn® fixed-line connections do not experience satellite handoff-related micro-outages. The ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia program records nbn® fixed-line outages separately from satellite services.
Source: accc.gov.au/consumers/telecommunications-and-internet/broadband-performance-data
Starlink: The ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia program (Report 31, December 2025) recorded an average of 0.35 brief outages per day for Starlink services. These micro-outages last 1–2 seconds and occur as the dish switches between satellites. While typically unnoticeable during web browsing and streaming, they may cause interruptions during video calls, VoIP calls, and online gaming.
