nbn® Free Fibre Upgrade: Who’s Eligible for a Free Fibre Upgrade
The nbn® free fibre upgrade program lets eligible customers upgrade to a full fibre internet connection at no installation cost.
That can upgrade your existing FTTN or FTTC (Fibre to the node or curb) to FTTP (fibre to the premise), giving you access to way higher download speeds.
Eligibility is based on address, the existing infrastructure, and whether the premise is considered a simple or complex connection.

Key takeaways
- Check eligibility first: You must be on FTTN or FTTC, and your address must be enabled for the upgrade.
- To trigger the upgrade, you usually need to order an eligible speed tier or plan.
- “Free” usually means nbn covers the standard FTTP install for simple premises. The technician confirms simple vs complex on the day.

What is the nbn Free Fibre Upgrade?
The nbn free fibre upgrade is an ongoing program that replaces copper-based connections (FTTN and FTTC) with full fibre internet connection (FTTP) with no installation cost for eligible customers. What that basically means is faster and more reliable internet, without having to pay the cost of installing fibre to the premise.
Your upgraded connection will need two new physical boxes to be installed. After that, you’ll connect to the internet in the same way, but with much faster speeds. Just in case, your existing connection will be left in place until you’re satisfied with the new set up.
What’s included vs not included
| Included (typically) | Not included / may still apply |
| Standard nbn FTTP installation for eligible premises | Non-standard/“complex” works if your premises isn’t classified as simple |
| Installation of FTTP connection equipment (external + internal boxes) | Optional upgrades to your home network/Wi-Fi equipment (router/mesh) |
| Provider coordination and booking process once you order an eligible plan | Landlord/building approvals (if renting / strata rules apply) |
| Keeping the old service active until FTTP is ready (commonly) | Monthly plan price changes if you move to a higher speed tier |
Who Is Eligible for a Free FTTP Upgrade?
To get the free fibre upgrade, there are 4 requirements:
- You’ll need to live in an eligible area
- The property needs an existing fibre to the node or curb connection
- You’ll need to put in an order for a plan with an eligible speed plan
- The installation needs to be classified as simple
Step 1. Your address must be in an eligible area
Eligibility is address-based, and it can vary even within the same suburb or street. Whether an area is enabled can depend on factors like local demand, the available technician workforce, and the overall cost-effectiveness from NBN Co. That doesn’t mean the fibre upgrade is only available in the city though; plenty of regional locations are included in the rollout as well. The quickest way to check if you’re eligible is to request a free eligibility check.
Step 2. Your current technology type
To be eligible for the free fibre upgrade, you’ll need an existing nbn connection that’s either fibre to the node (FTTN) or fibre to the curb (FTTC). This means the installation will just extend the fibre from the node or curb all the way into your home.
If you’re already on FTTP, you won’t need this upgrade. Again, the best way to check if your home has the correct technology is to request a free eligibility check.
Step 3. You must select an eligible speed tier
To get the installation started, you’ll need to put in an order for a plan that requires an FTTP connection. Your internet provider will then organise the installation.
For example, Skymesh’s ‘Fibre Fast’ plan requires a full fibre connection. Putting in an order for that plan will trigger the process of the free fibre upgrade.
Step 4. Your premises must be “simple”
The nbn free fibre upgrade is generally available for standard (“simple”) installations where the technician can safely run fibre and install the required equipment without extra site works.
A premises may be classed as “complex” if there are things like:
- Access issues (locked areas, unsafe access, restricted work zones)
- No clear pathway for cabling or conduit (no viable route without major works)
- Impact to culturally significant or heritage sites
- Other site conditions the nbn technician identifies on the day
Important: The nbn technician confirms “simple vs complex” on installation day. If it’s complex, the “free” portion may not apply in the same way, and you’ll be advised on the next steps for your property.
What is a ‘complex installation‘?
A complex installation just means there’s some extra steps required to finish your upgrade. It could be that more work is needed to run conduit from the local node or street, that you’re part of a block of flats, or a hundred other things. Each of these means different things for your nbn upgrade, so your technician will need to give you specific advice. It doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be paying out of pocket for your nbn upgrade, though that could be the outcome. If you’re worried your property will need a complex installation, you can still move forward with booking the upgrade and see what your technician says.
Is the FTTP Upgrade Really Free?
Yup, the nbn full fibre upgrade program offers totally free installation, assuming you meet the eligibility criteria. However, the free upgrade requires you to upgrade to a full fibre plan, which will change your monthly cost.
Monthly plan prices
Because full fibre plans are faster than plans using partial fibre connections, they can have slightly higher monthly fees. Of course, you might already be on the highest tier plan where new technology won’t change the price, as it is with the top SkyMesh plans. In this case, your monthly fee wouldn’t change. The exact impact on your monthly costs depends on your current plan and provider.
Equipment upgrades
You may not need a new modem or router to access FTTP internet if you’re already on a FTTN or FTTC connection, although the setup might need to change slightly.
However, if your router is particularly old, you might not get the full benefits of the faster speeds, especially on Wi-Fi. In this case, an upgrade might be worth the cost. The price of new routers can range from around $140 to $300, depending on what features you’re after. Your provider will be able to sell you one when you take out your new plan.
What Happens During Installation?
Once you’ve made an order for an eligible plan, a technician will be booked to install your full fibre internet service. An adult (18+) generally needs to be onsite to confirm access and agree to equipment placement. This will likely involve running conduit to your home, installing an external utility box and an internal connection box, and activating your new FTTP service.
Your internet provider will schedule installation as soon as possible, though the exact time will depend on technician availability. In any case, your existing internet service will stay active during that time. The installation itself should typically only take a few hours, assuming it’s a relatively straightforward install. You shouldn’t have much downtime for power, if any.
Installation steps
- Order a qualifying plan (Skymesh confirms eligibility and submits the upgrade order).
- Appointment booking is arranged with nbn (timing can vary by area and demand).
- Technician visit: fibre is run to your premises, and nbn installs required FTTP equipment (external + internal).
- Service activation: your new FTTP service is connected, with the old service typically kept live until the new one is working
Renting or strata?
It’s worth noting here that if you’re a renter (or you’re in a strata/managed building), you’re going to need explicit permission to get the installation done. That’s because the technician may need to drill, run cabling, and choose locations for the outside utility box and the inside connection box. Most landlords and body corporates shouldn’t have an issue with free installation of faster internet, but they’ll need to be consulted on the location of the utility and connection boxes.
What If My Address Isn’t Eligible?
If your place isn’t eligible for the free fibre upgrade, you can register with NBN Co for updates so that you’ll be informed as soon as that changes. Full fibre is the eventual aim, so it’s possible that you’ll be eligible in the near future.
If you want faster internet sooner you may be able to pay out of pocket for a fibre upgrade. You’ll likely need a nearby node or curbside fibre connection, but your installation technician will be able to give you more information about what’s available.
How Skymesh helps: If you’re unsure, our team can confirm what’s available at your address and explain the next best step.
Is the FTTP Upgrade Worth it?
For many people, upgrading to FTTP is worth it, especially if you can get the free full fibre upgrade. Generally, top FTTP plans are only a little more expensive than top FTTN or FTTC, but they offer a much faster and generally more reliable internet connection.
Here’s a quick comparison of the differences between partial fibre (FTTN/FTTC) and full fibre (FTTP) on Skymesh plans.
| Feature | FTTN/FTTC | FTTP |
| Maximum Theoretical Attainable Speeds | 100Mbps | 500 Mbps |
| Typical evening speeds | 96Mbps | – |
| Latency | Moderate | Lower |
| Reliability | Moderate – Copper dependent | Improved – Fibre direct |
| Future proof | Limited | High |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the FTTP upgrade really free?
For eligible addresses, “free” usually means nbn covers the standard FTTP installation for a simple premise. It doesn’t always mean every possible situation is free. If your install is classed as complex, or you need extra approvals or access, what’s involved can change.
What does “simple premises” mean?
A simple premise is a property where the technician can complete the upgrade using standard methods. That usually means safe access, a clear pathway to run the fibre, and a suitable place for the outside utility box and inside connection box. The technician confirms this at the appointment. If it’s classed as complex, you’ll be told what your options are.
Do I have to change plans or speed tier to get the upgrade?
Often, yes. In many cases, the FTTP upgrade is triggered when you order an eligible plan or speed tier that requires full fibre. If you are not sure which speed tier qualifies at your address, the Skymesh support team can check and point you to the right option.
Can I downgrade later?
If you upgrade to full fibre (FTTP), you won’t be able to downgrade your technology back to a partial fibre technology (FTTC or FTTN). You’ll also need to stay on your new plan for at least 12 months after the upgrade. If, after those 12 months, you decide you really don’t need the faster speeds, you may have the option to drop your plan to a lower speed plan if there are no other minimum services periods required by your contract.
How long does installation take?
Your internet service provider will schedule installation as soon as it can, depending on service demand in your area. The installation itself should only take a few hours, assuming it’s a relatively straightforward process. If your property requires a more complex installation, the technician should be able to provide more details.
Will I need a new modem or router?
Not always. Your current router may work fine, but older equipment can limit the speeds you get over Wi-Fi. If you want the best performance, you may choose to upgrade your router. If you tell us what you have at home, we can help you figure out what you need.
Will my internet stop working during the upgrade?
Your existing internet connection will stay active until your new connection is installed. The old technology will also be kept in place for a period of time to give you a chance to settle into your new technology.
Can renters get the nbn fibre upgrade?
Renters can still get the free nbn fibre upgrade, but you’ll need explicit consent from your landlord. A better internet technology should only add value to the home, so many landlords will be open to the idea if installation is free. However, they will need to sign off on the upgrade before you go ahead with it.
