How To Set Up WinBMD For Handwritten Scans

Following are all the instructions you will need to begin transcribing

Please follow them exactly as they are written as they

are very important

Download & install WinBMD first & then BMD Verify which sits in WinBMD’s Folder not a Folder of it’s own

I would suggest you create a Folder called “Transcribing” in a

place you’ll remember on your hard drive

Save the scan I have sent you by email to the Transcribing Folder

Open WinBMD — you will be presented with the

Header Input window

Fill in the fields with the information I have sent you in the email titled Header Input so that it looks like this BUT always use

YOUR details & scan name NOT the one on here

This is just an example to show you how it should look

Once you’ve hit OK-Start Transcribing, you will be taken to the WinBMD screen where you fill in the data from your scan

Next go into Options at the top & make sure SpeedBMD names & Auto Surnames In All Caps is NOT checked

Surnames are in Proper or Mixed Case—please do not use all Capitals UNLESS for some reason an entry on the scan is written that way

Go into Scan Viewer then Show Scan Image - locate

where you have saved the scan in your Transcribing Folder I sent you on your Hard Drive

Once your scan is open, go up to the top left of the scan

to View & then Show Ruler

To get the Ruler to work, you need to “calibrate” it

Firstly, a box will open explaining how it works— click OK

Place the Ruler directly under the first entry of the

scan then click on OK

Next place the Ruler under the 10th entry & again click on OK

Then you need to place the Ruler under the first entry of the 2nd column, click OK

A final message & you can now click OK again - you’re done calibrating

You can also by going into Image Tools, change the angle of scan if it is not straight, change the thickness of the Ruler & even the colour

Get used to the default settings first & then

decide what you’d like changed after you have some experience

Place the scan either above or below WinBMD so that you have one on top of the other but both are viewable

Now go into File then Define Path

You have 2 choices here - either enter the path of where your Folder called Transcribing is on your computer or leave it as the Default which is

C:\Program Files\WinBMD\Output

You need to be able to navigate to the Folder WinBMD is saving to so you can attach the file to an email to send to Jill & for uploading if you are going to upload manually

Even though WinBMD will upload automatically for you, it is a good idea to learn how to upload manually too!

You’re now ready to begin transcribing!

Please do not race through the transcription thinking

quantity is what we want

It isn’t

We want quality please

If you are ever unsure of an entry, please ask, we don’t bite!

You have 3 weeks to complete your first scan

If for some reason you cannot complete it in that time (unforseen things do happen & we understand that) but PLEASE let one of us know
